Marian goes 1-3 to start season

(Marquette, MI) - Marian University opened their season with a 1-3 start at the Finlandia University Invite. The Sabres victory came against UW-Stevens Point, while they fell to UW-La Crosse, Simpson College, and UW-Oshkosh. 

Marian opened the tournament with a 12-2 loss to UW-La Crosse. The Eagles scored four in the top of the first, while the Sabres answered with two in the bottom of the frame. The Eagles scored twice in the second and  sixth innings to take a 8-2 lead. Then, in the seventh, they tacked on four more. 

The Eagles out-hit the Sabres 11-5 and benefited from twelve walks in the contest. 

In their 12-8 loss to Simpson, the Sabres gave up four runs in the bottom of the first, but answered with four of their own in the top of the second off of four hits. Simpson scored a run in the third and then tacked on four more in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead. 

The Sabres rallied as they scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-8. Simpson tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory. 

Emilie Jansen (Kaukauna, WI) led the Sabres with three hits and two RBI's. Emily Wiesman (Sheboygan, WI) and Jenna Whitehead (Kimberly, WI) both had two hits for the Sabres. Brooke Haen (Oakfield, WI) knocked in two runs for Marian. 

Against UW-Oshkosh, Jansen and Wiesman both homered, but it wasn't enough as the Titans won 4-2. The Sabres out-hit the Titans 9-4, but fell to 0-3. Wiesman led the team with three hits, while Ashley Engler (Waterford, WI) added a pair of hits. 

Jamie Whitehead (Kimberly, WI) went the distance, giving up just four hits and striking out five. 

In their 6-5 victory over UW-Stevens Point, the Sabres out-hit the Pointers 8-6 and won despite committing three errros. Wiesman finished 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of RBI's. Rachel Mullendore (Amery, WI) hit her first career home run in the contest for the Sabres. 

Emily Turba (Wisconsin Rapids, WI) picked up the victory for Marian.
