(Fond du Lac, WI) - Bryan Ashbeck (Wabeno, WI) scored nine points in the last 1:16 on Saturday as Marian rallied from a late ten-point deficit to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran 72-71. With the victory, the Sabres moved into a tie for fourth place in the NAC North. Marian is now 9-12 overall and 6-7 in the NAC.
The first half saw eight ties and neither team had a lead larger than three points. The Warriors hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
The Warriors started the second half on a 12-4 run to take a 48-36 lead with 14:37 to play. The Warriors led right up to the end and held a 66-56 lead with 3:06 to play.
Trailing by six with 1:16 to play, Ashbeck hit a pair of free throws to make it 69-65. After a missed jumper by the Warriors, Ashbeck then hit a jumper in the paint to cut the deficit to two with :39 to play. The Warriors hit two free throws with :37 to play, but Ashbeck again answered with a three-pointer to make it 71-70 with :33 to play.
Marian then forced a turnover with :23 left and Ashbeck made the Warriors pay. He buried a jumper with :14 to play to give them a 72-71 lead. The Sabres then stopped Wisconsin Lutheran on their last possession and came out victorious.
The Sabres shot 42% from the field in the contest and held the Warriors to just 32% from the field. Marian out-rebounded the Warriors 48-34.
Logan Rankin (Algoma, WI) led the Sabres with 23 points and 9 rebounds. Jeff Harris (Calumet Park, IL) poured in 15 points, while Ashbeck added 9.
