(Adrian, MI) - Marian University is one win away from making history. The Sabres defeated Lake Forest College on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the MCHA Tournament and are now one win away from earning the school's and the MCHA's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Sabres fell behind early in this one as the Foresters scored just 2:48 into the contest off a Sean Farley goal. Marian responded nicely, as
Justin Cormier (Calgary, AB) scored at the 6:36 mark off assists from
Tommy Fitzpatrick (Ft. McMurray, AB) and
Nick Cinquegrani (Rolling Meadows, IL). At the 11:12 mark,
Lane Boswell (Calgary, AB) gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead with some help from
Chris Thompson (Woodbury, MN) and
Todd Collins (Whitby, ON).
The second period was relatively quiet, as there were no goals and four penalties.
In the third,
Mitch Kriz (Berwyn, IL) made it 3-1 as Boswell and Thompson were credited with assists. Then, with just 1:11 to play in the game,
Brendan Hull (Calgary, AB) appeared to put the game away with an assist going to
Zack Fray (Cambridge, ON).
Lake Forest had other ideas however, as they scored twice in the final minute to make it a 4-3 game. Their last goal, a power play goal, came with just three seconds remaining.
After winning the ensuing face off, the Foresters were able to get a shot off, but Marian's
Cullen Caldwell (Calgary, WI) stopped it to preserve the victory.
The Sabres outshot the Foresters 38-27 in the contest. Marian finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Lake Forest was 1-for-3.
Caldwell picked up the victory as he stopped 24 shots.
Marian is now 20-6 on the year and they have won fifteen straight contests.
The Sabres will face off against tenth-ranked, Adrian College tomorrow at 3:00 PM EST for a chance to hoist the Harris Cup.
