Marian loses close one

(Lisle, IL) - Marian University dropped a 76-74 road game on Saturday at Benedictine University. The Sabres led the entire first half and there were thirteen lead changes in a very close second half. With the defeat, Marian is now 2-13 and 0-7 in the Northern Athletics Conference. 

The Sabres shot very well in the contest, going 29-for-57 (50.9%) and took a 35-34 lead into halftime. Marian led by ten points on three occasions in the first half, but the Eagles went on a 14-5 run to close the half and keep it close. 

In the second, the game went back-and-forth much of the way. Neither team led by more than five points the entire half and it came right down to the end. 

Marian's Donnahugh Brown (Negril, Jamaica) hit a jumper with 1:56 left to tie the game at 74. He was fouled on he play and had a chance to put Marian up one, but couldn't convert. After an Eagle miss, they grabbed an offensive rebound and Marian committed a foul with 1:08 to play. The Eagles hit a pair of free throws to take a 76-74 lead. 

Each team missed a jumper on their next possession and it came down to the final possession. The Sabres got the ball back with :17 to play, but couldn't convert as they were called for an offensive foul with just two seconds remaining. 

Jeff Harris (Calumet Park, IL) led Marian with 20 points, while Brown added 16. Colin Lohenry (Algoma, WI) chipped in with 10 points. 

Benedictine had a big advantage from the free throw line, going 24-for-35, compared to Marian's 7-for-15.
