(Fond du Lac, WI) - Marian University defeated Concordia University-Chicago on Saturday afternoon 72-58 to move to 10-7 overall and 5-7 in the Northern Athletics Conference. The Sabres led the entire contest and came up big from the free-throw line. The Sabres connected on 25-of-36 free throws to help seal the victory.
Marian got out to a quick 6-0 lead as
Elizabeth Zutz (Valders, WI) and
Dani Huray (Little Chute, WI) hit back-to-back three's. They built a double-digit lead at the 8:09 mark, but the Cougars came back to make it 33-27 at the break. Huray had 11 points in the half, while Zutz added 10.
The Sabres shot 12-for-30 in the half, while the Cougars shot just 8-for-29.
In the second, the Cougars cut the deficit to 46-44 with 11:00 to go, but the Sabres went on a 7-0 run over the next 2:31 to take a 53-44 lead. The Cougars made one last run and cut the deficit to 55-52 with 4:50 to play, but Marian quickly built a ten-point lead with 1:58 to play. The Sabres iced the game down the stretch from the free-throw line.
Zutz had a big game, finishing with a career-high 27 points. She also had 13 rebounds. She connected on 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Alexis Becker (North Fond du Lac, WI) turned in a big offensive performance as well, netting 20 points. She hit 10-of-12 free throws. Huray added 15 points for Marian, as she connected on four deep balls.
Emily Reiter (Hilbert, WI) pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Sabres out-rebounded CUC 49-39 and out-shot them (36%-30%).
The Sabres are back in action again on Tuesday, as they will host Wisconsin Lutheran College.
