RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – Freshman Brittany Syms netted her first career goal in the 80th minute to tie the game, then supplied an encore by giving the Marian University women's soccer team a 2-1 lead four minutes later, one they would not relinquish on the way to a Northern Athletics Conference road victory over host Dominican University at West Campus Field Saturday, Oct. 1.

The Sabres struggled to muster much offense for the first 79-plus minutes, finishing the game on the short end of a 14-8 shot discrepancy. If not for the right foot of Syms and the solid net-minding of Marian keeper freshman Caitlyn Rosenberger, then the Sabres would have been looking at an even 3-3 record and a disappointing drop in the NAC standings.

The win improves Marian's record to 6-5 overall, 4-2 in the NAC and within a win away from jumping all the way up into a second place tie in the standings. Dominican was handed its first conference loss of the season as it now sits 6-3-1 (4-1-1 NAC).

Syms was the unsung hero in the match, entering play without a single goal to her credit. But she came through in a very big way with her first career goal in the 80th minute followed by her second of the game in the 84th minute.

Dominican's Ashley Meyer gave the home team an early lead in the third minute, which was thought to have been enough to hold until Syms' late-game heroics.

Chloe Kierszh assisted on the game-winner, her second assist of the season. Rosenberger finished with seven saves in all 90 minutes in goal. The Stars led the corner kick battle with a slim 4-2 edge.

The Sabres return home for a mid-week matchup against Lakeland College Tuesday, Oct. 4. They will recognize the fight against MS in the match, asking all fans who attend to raise money for the cause. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
