FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) –
Brittany Syms recorded her second multi-goal game of the season and the Marian University women's soccer team bested the visiting Benedictine University Eagles, 2-1, in Northern Athletics Conference action at Smith Fields this afternoon, Oct. 15.
The freshman Sault Ste. Marie native recorded a match-high six shots, including four on goal, as she raised her season total to four goals for the Sabres. Syms scored the game's first goal in the 13th minute as she took a pass from
Taylor Hozeska off a corner kick and chipped it over the keeper's head from about seven yards. Her second score broke a 1-1 tie in the 32nd minute and that's all Marian would need.
The Sabres improve their record to 9-6 overall, 7-2 in NAC play, while the Eagles fall to 6-7-1 (5-5 NAC).
Syms led a Marian squad that outshot BenU, 14-5, in the match with nine of its shots reaching goal. The Sabres also dominated the corner kick column, 11-6.
In a 2-1 victory over Dominican back on Oct. 1, Syms also recorded two goals, scoring the final two in the final 10 minutes of the team's come-from-behind victory en route to earning NAC Player of the Week honors.
The Sabres sit in prime postseason position heading into the final stretch of conference play. With three matches remaining in league play, Marian is three clear in the loss column to seventh place Benedictine and still has a shot of gaining one of the top-two seeds in the conference tournament, which would give them a first-round bye.
Marian is back in action this Tuesday, Oct. 18, playing host to Concordia Wisconsin at Smith Fields in a 7 p.m. start.
