FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind two goals by
Laura Maly and another from
Chloe Kierszh, the Marian University women's soccer team defeated the visiting Alverno College Inferno in a Northern Athletics Conference Senior Day victory at Smith Fields this afternoon, Oct. 22.
Five seniors,
Kate Koffman,
Taylor Hozeska,
Hailey Wisner, Kaitlin Stumpner and
Mollie Tennessen, were honored prior to the game for their accomplishments on the pitch, and with the help of their teammates, they finished their careers with a win on Smith Fields. The Sabres tallied 39 shots in the match, while giving up just one in the dominating effort on both sides.
Marian improves to 11-6 overall, 9-2 in the NAC after securing its fourth straight victory. Meanwhile, Alverno falls to 6-13 (2-9 NAC).
Kierszh finally broke through Alverno goalkeeper, Samantha Robinson, late into the first half with her second goal of the season in the 40th minute. The junior found herself in just the right spot as
Jade Koeune's corner kick came sailing through and put a foot on it to give the Sabres a 1-0 first half lead.
Maly then provided some insurance with two quick scores out of halftime. The freshman regained sole possession of the team lead in goals when she tallied her ninth in breakaway fashion to give the Sabres a 2-0 advantage 44 seconds into the second half.
Twelve minutes later, fellow freshman
Brittany Syms found Maly streaking across the middle for a goal that snuck just inside the right post from about 10 yards out.
Maly totaled 10 shots on the afternoon, including six on goal. Tennessen added six shots, while Kierszh and
Leisa Conn each tallied five apiece.
Robinson faced shot-after-shot throughout the day, making 14 saves despite allowing three goals.
The Sabres will wrap up the regular season, while trying to secure the overall second seed in the 2011 NAC Tournament, when they hit the road for 3:30 p.m. matchup at Maranatha, Thursday, Oct. 27.
