Box Score vs. CUC
Box Score vs. NPU
RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team saw its weekend road trip get off to a slow start as it dropped a pair of matches to Northern Athletics Conference, Concordia Chicago, and non-conference opponent, North Park, in a triangular meet hosted by CUC at the Geiseman Gymnasium today, Oct. 7.
The Sabres fell in straight sets to both opponents, but its night-cap loss to North Park was especially hard. As difficult as bouncing back from a straight set defeat to CUC (26-24, 25-22, 25-9) was, the defeat to NPU was even harder as all three sets went to extra points (27-25, 34-32, 30-28).
Marian's record now reads 6-17 overall, 3-4 in NAC play while CUC improves to 9-11 (4-2 NAC) with a pair of wins and North Park moves to 10-9.
The match against Concordia Chicago would certainly like to be forgotten in the minds of the Sabres as errors plagued the visitors into a season-low hitting percentage of -.169 despite keeping the first two sets very close. Ten errors in the final set prevented Marian from making any sort of comeback.
The Sabres would respond with three very competitive sets against North Park, but the Viking defense was just too much as three players recorded double-digit totals in digs. Danielle Waldvogel led the way with 20 digs followed by 16 from Shelby Switzer and 14 by Jessica Holmes.
Ashley Zumbrock tallied 12 for the Sabres.
Marian's Katlyn Jarvis turned in a good match as well with 13 kills.
Elizabeth Zutz added five of the team's nine blocks with two solo stuffs.
The Sabres close out their busy week tomorrow with two matches against Dominican and Robert Morris (Ill.). First serve is slated for 10 a.m. between the Sabres and Stars followed by a noon start between Marian and RMU.
