WAUKESHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting Carroll University squad that shot over 60 percent from the field and drained 12 three-pointers en route to an 88-65 win in the Johnson Bank Tip-Off Classic hosted by Carroll this evening, Nov. 18.
The Pioneers shot 60.8 percent (31-for-51) for the game, including 12-for-21 from downtown in the win. Kyle Jones led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including four three's. Four Pioneers reached double-figures in all. The Sabres tried to keep pace, nearly shooting 50 percent in the first half, but struggled in the second half and couldn't recover.
Carroll improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Sabres fall to 0-2.
Cody Veleke led all Sabres with 16 poins on 6-of-10 from the field.
Sam Koslowski added 12 points and three assists.
The Sabres shot 47.4 percent (9-for-19) in the first half, including 4-of-9 from three and connected on 16-of-20 free throws, but still trailed 47-38 at the end of the first half after Carroll shot 56.3 percent and knocked down seven three's.
But they wouldn't stop there. The Pioneers upped the ante by shooting 68.4 percent from the field in the second half. The hosts led by as many as 24 points in the contest and will play Carthage in the tournament championship tomorrow.
Marian will face Martin Luther in the third place game at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
