FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Senior
Taylor Hozeska saved her best for the absolute last moment of her time on the Smith Fields pitch as she connected on a free kick from 25 yards out with five seconds remaining in overtime to propel the Marian University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Conference tournament semifinal matchup this afternoon, Nov. 2.
It was Hozeska's fourth goal of the season as she curled it into the far left post and it sent the Sabres to their first-ever NAC title game in which they will face Aurora University at 1 p.m. in Aurora, Ill on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Conditions were poor as it rained throughout the duration of play, but both teams still managed to build scoring opportunities as the game went on. Marian outshot Edgewood, 9-8, but both squads were able to put seven shots on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper,
Caitlyn Rosenberger, made seven saves in earning her third shutout of the season. The Sabres are playing some of their best soccer of the year heading into Saturday's title game, stringing together their sixth straight win and fourth consecutive shutout with the victory over the Eagles. The consecutive scoreless minutes streak for the MU defense now stands at 445:21.
Marian improves to 13-6 overall, tying a school record for wins in a season while advancing to the program's first conference title game in school history. Meanwhile, Edgewood College's season comes to an end at 14-5-1 overall.
The NAC title game between the Sabres and Spartans will determine which team earns the conference's automatic qualifying spot into the NCAA Division III national tournament.
