Coach Wise Postgame Interview
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Junior center forward
Dakota Dubetz accounted for two goals and one assist as the Marian University men's hockey team defeated Lake Forest, 3-0, in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association season and home opener Friday evening, Nov. 4.
Dubetz, a junior, tallied his second and third goals of the season in the first and second periods, respectively. Freshman
Brian Berger also scored a goal and an assist, while
Brendan Roberts added two assists and
Tanner Burton and
Tommy Fitzpatrick each totaled one helper. The Sabres converted on 1-of-3 power play chances and netminder,
Josh Baker, made all 19 saves for his first shutout of the season.
The Sabres improve to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in MCHA play, while Lake Forest drops to 0-1 (0-1 MCHA).
Dubetz got Marian on the board early with a goal at the 13:13 mark of the first period, capitalizing on a great build up by Roberts and Burton to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
In the second period, the Sabres nearly made it 2-0 early on as
Chris Thompson got behind the Forester defense for a short-handed try, but missed off the left pad of Lake Forest goaltender Marc Stuart. Berger avenged the missed opportunity to actually make it 2-0 with his third goal of the year. Roberts and Dubetz were credited with the assists.
Dubetz then added his second goal of the game and made it 3-0 Sabres with 2:19 remaining in the second period. A quiet third followed as Marian was called for two penalties, both of which could not be capitalized by a stagnant Forester scoring attack.
The Foresters had a more legitimate chance to cut into the 3-0 lead when Phillippe Boucher was awarded a penalty shot with 9:42 remaining in the third period. But Baker stoned the shot en route to his first career shutout.
The Sabres and Foresters will wrap up the home-and-home series tomorrow night on the campus of Lake Forest College. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
