STEVENS POINT, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to host UW-Stevens Point in an NCHA game this evening, Nov. 4.
Amanda Waigand added her nation-leading sixth goal of the season in the loss.
The host Pointers built a comfortable 3-0 lead before
Rachel Mullendore finally got the Sabres on the board. UW-Stevens Point then tallied a fourth goal prior to Waigand making it 4-2 with 8:06 remaining in the game, but it was too late as the Pointers proved too much to overcome.
UW-Stevens Point improves to 2-0-1 on the season, 1-0 in NCHA play, while Marian falls to 0-3 (0-2 NCHA).
Amanda Alexander was once again busy in goal for the visiting Sabres, making 41 saves in the defeat. The freshman netminder has now made 41 or more saves in each of the team's three games this season, giving her 134 saves on the season, which is tops in the nation.
Erin Marvin tested the freshman first with a goal just nearly 10 minutes into the game. The Pointers would add two more goals before the midway point of the second period. Mullendore then got the Sabres on the scoreboard with 3:16 remaining in the second.
Shelby Sayers-Jones and Waigand were credited with the assists.
UWSP's Allie Tanzer got the tally back with a power play score just 2:55 into the third period. Waigand would then cap the scoring with an unassisted goal nine minutes later.
The Sabres and Pointers will play the back end of the home-and-home series at the Blueline Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
