LAKE FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – Three unanswered goals propelled the Marian University men's hockey team to a 3-1 MCHA victory over the host Lake Forest College Foresters tonight, Nov. 5. The win gave the Sabres the home-and-home series sweep after last night's 3-0 win in Fond du Lac.
An early second period goal was followed by a quick answer from Marian's
Dakota Dubetz to end the second period in a 1-1 tie. Two third period goals by the Sabres, including
Brendan Roberts' game-winner and
Josh Martin's insurance tally, won it for the visitors.
The Sabres improved to 3-1 on the young season and 2-0 in MCHA play. The Foresters fell to 0-2 (0-2 MCHA).
Lake Forest's Dave Sharpe started the scoring with a second period goal at the 3:01 mark. Shortly thereafter, though, LFC's Ethan Goldberg was whistled for a tripping minor that gave the Sabres their second power play opportunity, one in which they would convert.
Dubetz scored his fourth goal of the season at the 4:13 mark to tie the game at 1-1 on assists by
Brian Berger and
Tommy Fitzpatrick.
In the third period, Roberts scored the go-ahead goal just passed the midway point in the frame on an assist by Dubetz. Martin then added a short-handed, empty net insurance goal with just 1:07 remaining to seal the victory.
Marian was outshot in the 28-21 in the game, but Sabre goaltender
Josh Baker made 27 saves, including 11 in the third period, to earn the victory.
The Sabres will head north next weekend to take on Finlandia in a pair of MCHA road contests Nov. 11-12. Friday's game is slated for 7:15 p.m. eastern time.
