Coach Cowan Postgame Interview
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – An early first period goal by
Amanda Waigand wasn't enough to hold off the offensive attack of UW-Stevens Point as the Pointers scored a 5-2 road victory over the Sabres at Blueline Family Ice Center this afternoon, Nov. 5.
Waigand added to her incredible start as she tallied her seventh goal of the season just 6:56 into the game. The lead held until the second period when the Pointers scored three goals to take a 3-2 lead. UWSP would add two more tallies in the third period, including Cassandra Salmen's second of the game to cap the scoring with just over 10 minutes left in the game.
The Pointers kept alive their unbeaten streak to start the season, moving to 3-0-1 on the year, 2-0 in NCHA play. The Sabres fell to 0-4 (0-3 NCHA).
Trailing 2-1 in the second period, hope was restored as Marian's
Kristin Skubic connected on her first goal of the season to tie the game. The power play score was assisted by
Devan Lesch and
Nicole Drews.
However, a little more than five minutes later, UWSP's Ava Plamondon scored to regain the lead, one it would not relinquish.
The Pointers outshot the Sabres 43-17 in the game. Marian goaltender
Kaytlin Ruzicka made her first start of the season and stopped 38 shots in the contest. Pointer netminder Sierra Dart turned away 15 tries en route to the win.
The Sabres will seek their first win of the season this Friday, Nov. 11, when they take on Lake Forest College in the first game of a home-and-home series. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
