FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team set a team record for most goals in a period after netting three in the second period of a 4-3 NCHA overtime loss to visiting College of St. Scholastica at home this evening, Dec. 2.
Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the Sabres scored three times in the final five minutes to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. The final two Sabre goals came off the stick of
Rachel Mullendore as she tallied her second and third goals of the season. But she was upstaged by Michelle Rebek's game-tying and game-winning scores in the third period and overtime, leading the Saints to the 4-3 win.
The Saints improve to 5-2 overall and 5-2 in the NCHA, while the Sabres fall to 0-7 (0-6 NCHA).
Jordan Klimek and Malin Zetterberg gave St. Scholastica a 2-0 lead in the second period.
Alex DeBoer then scored a power play goal for the Sabres to get them on the board at the 15:09 mark. Mullendore then scored the first of two goals in a span of 2:21 to propel host Marian to a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.
Rebek answered the bell in the third with the tying goal at the 3:03 mark and then sent everyone home 3:57 into overtime with her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
In their previous meeting, the Sabres took an early 2-0 lead before the Saints came back to record the 4-3 overtime win in Duluth. The Saints prevented what looked to be an opposite occurrence of that last meeting and it was Rebek to save the day once again, the same player who scored the game-winner in overtime a season ago.
The Sabres and Saints will do it again tomorrow afternoon at Blueline Family Ice Center. Puck drops at 1.
