ROCKFORD, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) –
Elizabeth Zutz's 25 points paced the Marian University women's basketball team to its first Northern Athletics Conference victory of the 2011-12 season as it handed host Rockford College its first NAC loss in a, 66-54, win inside the Seaver Center today, Dec. 3.
Zutz went 10-for-19 from the field and knocked down two three's, while adding six rebounds and two steals, in helping the Sabres to the win.
Alexis Becker and
Sarah Albert added 12 points apiece as well. The big stat of the game was the 28 points scored off 26 Regent turnovers on the day.
Marian improves to 4-2 overall, 1-2 in the NAC, while Rockford falls to 3-3 (2-1 NAC).
Zutz scored 15 first half points to lead the Sabres to a 36-25 advantage at the break, but it was the defense that held the Regents at bay. Rockford's Britney Curry, who recently became a member of the 1,000-point, 500-rebound club, was held to just six points and three rebounds in the first half. As a team, the Regents shot only 31.6 percent on six made field goals in the first half and 33.3 (15-for-45) percent for the game.
Marian used consistent play on both ends of the floor, going 22-for-55 (40 percent) from the field while draining nine three-pointers. The defense forced 26 turnovers and held the Regents to 0-for-6 from three-point range.
Off the bench, the Sabres outscored Rockford 16-5 thanks to seven points in 16 minutes by
Amelia Mirsberger and five points and five rebounds from
Alyssa Pyscher.
Marian will be back in action this Tuesday, Dec. 6, when they travel to Maranatha Baptist. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
