ST. PAUL, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team squandered a 2-0 lead that spilled into the third period before host Hamline University scored three times in the third period to steal the victory at home this evening, Dec. 9.
Kiley O'Connell and
Shelby Sayers-Jones spotted the Sabres a 2-0 lead after the one period of play. A scoreless second frame brought the royal blue and scarlet 20 minutes closer to their first win of the year until Hamline found the back of the net three times in the third. The final two goals were within 29 seconds of each other, the game-winner accounted for by Jordan Verleye at the 14:03 mark.
Hamline improves to 2-6-1 overall, while Marian falls to 0-10 on the year.
O'Connell's goal came at the 5:15 mark in the first period on assists by
Katie Lindsley and Sophie Shieldt. Sayers-Jones followed that up with an unassisted tally at the 15:42 mark to give the Sabres a long-lasting cushion. It wasn't long enough, however, as the Pipers finally found the shooting touch in the third.
Corinne Henning cut the deficit in half as Megan Campbell and Katie Valimont assisted on a goal at the 4:20 mark. At the 13:34 mark, Jessica Kraus answered once again with the unassisted tying goal.
Then Verleye netted the game-winner on assists by Henning and Haley Johnson to give the Pipers their first lead of the night.
The Sabres pulled their goalie,
Amanda Alexander, with 35 seconds left, but it went for naught as Hamline hung on for the improbable come-from-behind win at home. Alexander went on to make 44 saves on the night compared to just 17 for her counterpart, Sarah Schneekloth.
The Sabres and Pipers will do it again tomorrow afternoon for the non-conference series finale beginning at 2 p.m. Click
