(Fond du Lac, WI) - The Sabres won game two of their doubleheader vs. Edgewood College on Wednesday evening to earn the split with the Eagles at Smith Fields. Marian lost game one 6-3, but rebounded to win 4-2 in the finale.
Marian is now 10-21 overall and 9-9 in the Northern Athletics Conference as they get ready for a big weekend where they will play six games between Friday and Sunday.
Edgewood took advantage of some shaky Marian defense in the first inning of game one to plate three runs. Marian answered with two in the second to make it 3-2 as Nikki Ponticelli hit a RBI-double and Emily Boehnlein drew a bases-loaded walk.
Both teams scored in the fifth and the Eagles delivered a big blow in the sixth as Emily Monson hit a two-run home run.
The Eagles out-hit Marian 9-8 and Marian was led by Jenna Whitehead as she was 2-for-3.
Cherise Waltz struck out eleven in the defeat.
Game two was scoreless through 6.2 innings. With Niki LaPlant on second, Whitehead singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. After an Aubrey O'Brien walk, Brooke Haen cleared the bases with a double to right field. She later scored on a Ponticelli single.
Edgewood didn't go quietly in the seventh as they scored two runs and stranded the bases loaded.
Both teams had five hits and Marian recorded four of their hits in the sixth inning.
Waltz went the distance in the victory and struck out five. She gave up five hits and just two earned runs.
Marian is back in action on Friday, as they will travel to Aurora University. Action is set to begin at 3:00 PM.
