Sabres win game two to earn split at Rockford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rockford, IL) - The Sabres lost game one 1-0 at Rockford on a walkoff hit, but rebounded nicely to defeat the Regents 6-4 in nine innings in game two on Saturday. Marian is now 11-24 overall and 10-12 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

The Sabres will conclude their regular season tomorrow at home vs. Alverno College. The Sabres are currently a game behind Concordia University-Chicago for the sixth and final spot in the 2011 NAC Tournament. Concordia-Chicago plays at home on Monday vs. Edgewood College.

Game one was a pitcher's dual throughout, as Marian's Cherise Waltz struck out ten and gave up just one earned run on four hits in her seven innings. Rockford's Eryn Dougherty struck out eight in the shutout victory.

Marian had some chances, including stranding a pair of runners in the first and third, but couldn't come up with the timely hit. The Regents big hit came in the bottom of the seventh as Biz Janusick singled in Alyssa Novak with one out to win the game.

In game two, the Sabres trailed 3-0 going into the fourth inning. In the fourth, Aubrey O'Brien walked and then stole second. She came into score on a Jenna Whitehead single.

In the fifth, Marian tied it as O'Brien doubled to score Brooke Haen and Stephanie Kersten. Haen had tripled earlier in the inning.

Marian scored what looked to be the winning run in the seventh as Kersten's double scored Emily Boehnlein.. Rockford responded in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own.

Marian won the game in the ninth as Whitehead hit a two-RBI single to score O'Brien and Haen.

Waltz picked up the win as she went the distance. She scattered ten hits and struck out seven. She did not walk a batter.

Whitehead led the offense with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs. Haen also had a pair of hits, as well as a pair of runs. O'Brien scored twice as well.

First pitch vs. Alverno is scheduled for 12:00 PM tomorrow at Smith Fields.
