FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team picked up its first victory of the 2011 campaign with a four-set triumph (25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 25-19) on the road over Wisconsin Lutheran College in the Northern Athletics Conference opener this evening, Sept. 13.
The Sabres took the first set by a narrow 25-22 margin before dropping the second set, 25-18, and then rebounded by taking the final two sets en route to the victory. Kaitlin Jarvis and
Carlie Kinsey paced Marian with double-digit kills, posting 11 and 10, respectively. Meanwhile
Katie Reimer notched her sixth double-double of the season by recording a match-high 30 assists to go along with 10 digs.
The Sabres improve to 1-9 overall, 1-0 in NAC play while the Warriors fall to 2-5 (0-1 NAC).
Marian was the better hitting team on this night as it tallied 38 kills as a team for a .128 hitting percentage opposed to just an .049-clip for the host Warriors. Attack errors appeared to plague Wisconsin Lutheran all night as it was hindered with 39 miscues compared to just 17 for the visiting Sabres.
Kelli Johnson paced the Warriors with 14 kills and a .370 hitting percentage while Beth Baxter finished with 20 helpers and Mariah Bukiewicz with 19. WLC's Kayla Ridgeman turned in 25 digs to lead all defenders.
Other notable Sabre performances included
Elizabeth Zutz's six kills on a .312 hitting percentage and
Ashley Zumbrock's team-leading 22 digs. Marian recorded 9.5 blocks with Zutz assisting on five of those.
Marian will have a day off before Thursday's home opener against conference foe Concordia Wisconsin. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
