Brandon Zipperer's goal in the 62nd minute broke a 1-1 tie and helped the Marian University men's soccer team prevail over Wisconsin Lutheran College in the team's homecoming matchup and Northern Athletics Conference opener at Smith Fields today, Sept. 17.
The sophomore Zipperer's first career came off a rebound right in front of the WLC keeper, Jon Stewart. Sophomore forward
David Reinke gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute as Zipperer fed him a brilliant through ball behind the Warrior defense to put the home team on the board. Both goal scorers assisted on each other's goal. WLC's Jake Semmann tied the game with a 54th minute score as he lifted one over Marian keeper
Tim Wszalek's outstretched hand from 25 yards out.
With the win, Marian improves its record to 1-4-1 overall, 1-0 in NAC play, while the Warriors drop to 3-3 (0-1 NAC).
Wisconsin Lutheran outshot the Sabres, 15-10, and garnered five corner kicks to just one for Marian. It was a physical match from the start as both teams combined for 28 fouls. Marian's
Raul Perez was issued a yellow card in the 44th minute while WLC's Brett Maxwell was given a red card for instigating an altercation in the 75th minute.
Marian will look to make it two win in a row as it hosts Luther College in a non-conference match tomorrow, Sept. 18, at Smith Fields. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
