FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's soccer team fell victim to a hard-fought overtime defeat to the visiting UW-Oshkosh Titans as Nicole Strieker broke a scoreless tie in the second minute of extra time to give her team the victory at Smith Fields tonight, Sept. 20.
The Sabres stuck right with their nearby foes for the first 91 minutes of play, nearly matching them shot for shot as UW-Oshkosh pulled away towards the end to capture the 14-9 shot advantage. Strieker's break-through occurred inside the six-yard box when she was able to sneak by the Marian goalkeeper, Caitlyn Rosenberger and convert an easy scoring opportunity for the difference in the game.
The Sabres fall to 4-4 on the season while the Titans improve to 4-2 overall.
Rosenberger made several key saves in the first half to keep both sides scoreless for the majority of the match. The freshman net-minder finished with six saves in the contest, just shy of a career-high nine she set in a win over MSOE earlier this season. Opposite her were Brittany Walder and Katie Berkopec, who combined for four saves. Walder started the match while Berkopec came in later to play the entire second half and overtime.
Titan forward Megan White led the match with four shots including one on goal. Teammate Kiley Hauck managed to get off three shots in the contest. Strieker's goal was her only shot of the match.
The Sabres were led by Laura Maly's three shots while six others each recorded a shot. The Titans led the corner kick battled, 5-1.
Marian will jump back into Northern Athletics Conference play as its hosts Concordia Chicago in a match slated for 2:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 24, at Smith Fields.
