FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team erased a seven-match losing streak to Ripon College and earned its first straight sets victory in the process by defeating the Red Hawks (25-18, 25-13, 25-23) inside Sadoff Gymnasium this evening, Sept. 21.
The Sabres hit for a season-high .330 attack percentage as they converted 48 kills on 94 total attacks while committing just 17 errors for the match. Meanwhile, Ripon struggled offensively, hitting just .155 (27-for-84) and committing 14 errors as a squad. Junior setter Katie Reimer tied a career-high with 41 assists and Kaitlyn Jarvis and Elizabeth Zutz each tallied double-digit kills with 13 and 12, respectively.
With the win, the Sabres improve to 4-10 overall while the Red Hawks fall to 3-12.
After falling behind 7-6 in the first set, Marian strung together six straight points on the way to hitting .407 as a team and cruising to a 25-18 set win.
In the second set, the Sabres trailed just once as Ripon took a 2-1 lead early on. However, a 6-1 run – fueled by a trio of Ripon errors – regained the lead for Marian, 7-3. An Aileen Maier kill would cap off a run that saw Marian score 12 of the final 15 points to win the final set, 25-13.
Sloppy play led to a closer third and final set, but it was Maier who slammed the door shut once again to capitalize on a 25-23 set win and clinch the match. She finished with seven kills for the Sabres.
Carlie Kinsey also finished with seven kills while Ashley Zumbrock recorded a match-high 11 digs for the home squad.
The Sabres will face the rare task of attempting to beat Ripon twice in a row as they face the Red Hawks in the opener of the Ripon College Tournament to be held this weekend, Sept. 23-24. Marian and Ripon will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday.
