Box Score
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Three unanswered goals in the third period led the Marian University men's hockey team to an MCHA upset win over host and 12th-ranked MSOE, this evening, Jan. 13.
Tommy Fitzpatrick tied the score just 44 seconds into the third period. At the 3:23 mark,
Dakota Dubetz netted the game-winner with the help of
Mitch Kriz, who got the assist.
Brian Berger later added an empty net goal to seal the win.
Josh Baker made 27 saves, including all seven in the final period to record his fifth victory of the season.
With the win, Marian improves to 7-3-4 overall, 6-0-3 in the MCHA. The Sabres remain the only unbeaten team in the league with the victory. Meanwhile, MSOE falls to 10-4 (7-2 MCHA).
Chris Thompson put the Sabres on the board first, using a pass from
Matt Berger to get the job done at the 9:05 mark. Less than five minutes later, MSOE's Cole Gibson tied the game with his ninth goal of the year on a pair of assists by Todd Krupa and West Bauman.
The score would stay knotted up until the 12:07 mark of the second period when Krupa found the net to give the Raiders a slim 2-1 advantage. Marian was 0-for-3 on power plays in the second period and 0-for-5 in the game. The Raiders were 0-for-3 for the contest.
Fearing MSOE may get the first leg of their regular season series, as was the case one year ago en route to a Raider sweep, the Sabres came out with a lot of energy in the third period. Fitzpatrick wasted little time, taking a feed from
Brendan Roberts to convert the tying score just 44 seconds into the period.
Dubetz gave the Sabres a 3-2 lead with his eighth goal of the season at the 3:23 mark before Berger netted his 11th goal of the year with an empty-netter at the 18:42 mark.
Both teams will change venues and go at it again tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. start inside Blueline Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.
