Men's Hoops Downs Benedictine For First NAC Win

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Junior guard Jeff Harris paced the Marian University men's basketball team with a game-high 20 points in dispatching the visiting Benedictine University Eagles, 67-64, in Northern Athletics Conference play inside Sadoff Gymnasium this afternoon, Jan. 14.

Harris went 7-for-12 from the field and knocked down five three's, while adding a game-high nine rebounds, as he led three Sabres in double-figures. Cody Veleke scored 15 points on 6-of-9 from the floor, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, while Sam Koslowski also hit a pair of three's in notching 11 points on the afternoon.

Marian records its first NAC victory of the season, improving to 4-11 overall, 1-6 in the NAC, while Benedictine falls to 4-10 (3-4 NAC).

Trailing 24-17 in the first half, Marian called a timeout following a 12-5 run by BenU at the 9:51 mark in the first half. It proved useful as the Sabres embarked on an 11-0 run to take a 28-25 lead and they never looked back.

MU's lead grew to as many as 14 points with 6:05 remaining in the second half. It used solid shooting, going 23-for-25 (41.8 percent) from the field, including 10-for-22 from the three-point line. The defense held BenU to just 37.5 percent shooting (21-for-56) from the floor and only 4-for-17 from beyond the arc.

A dismal day at the line prevented the Eagles from completing any such comeback as they went just 18-for-27 at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Sabres collected an 11-for-15 clip at the line.

Marian led 37-29 after the first half and turned 15 BenU turnovers into 17 points throughout the game.
The Sabres completed a doubleheader sweep of Benedictine as the women's team claimed a 67-61 win in the game prior.

Marian will be back in action this Tuesday, Jan. 17, as it takes on NAC foe Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee.
