FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Sophomore
Sarah Albert poured in 27 points and the Marian University women's basketball team dominated every facet of play in its, 75-48, Northern Athletics Conference win over Lakeland College, holding the Muskies to a season-low point total this evening, Jan. 18.
Albert's 27 points came on 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 from downtown and 7-of-7 at the free throw line. She came into the contest leading the nation in three-point shooting at 55.6 percent and improved on that number tonight. Albert was the lone Sabre to score in double-figures, but junior
Elizabeth Zutz hauled in a game-high and season-high 14 rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench.
An 11-point lead seemed slim for the Sabres heading into the second half, but a 19-6 run quickly made it a 22-point, 45-23, game with 15:08 remaining. Marian connected on five of their 12 three-pointers during the run and never looked back. The Sabres led wire-to-wire and out-rebounded the Muskies 50-30 in the game.
Marian improves to 11-6 overall, 7-4 in the NAC after winning its sixth conference game in the last seven tries. Meanwhile, the Muskies were the second-best scoring team in the NAC coming into tonight at 67.4 points per contest, but were held to a season-low on their second-worst shooting night of the year. They fall for the second time in a row to drop to 9-6 (4-5 NAC).
Marian jumped out early with a 6-0 run out of the gate, capped by an Albert three-pointer which forced Lakeland to call a quick timeout just over two minutes into the game. The lead grew even more as the Sabres led 21-6 by the midway point before going into halftime with a 26-15 advantage.
The royal blue and scarlet held the Muskies to 20.8 percent (5-for-24) shooting in the first half, while Lakeland managed just 4-for-11 at the charity stripe. That trend would continue in the second half as the visitors finished the game a dismal 9-for-29 at the free throw line.
The rebounding margin was the most for Marian since its game at Aurora back on Jan. 7, when the Sabres out-rebounded the Spartans 50-29 in a 76-53 win. Zutz finished one point shy of a double-double to go along with 14 rebounds.
Senior
Alexis Becker moved closer to becoming the 12th member of the 1,000-point at Marian, scoring eight points to move within 18 of reaching the mark. Junior
Bianca Whittington added seven assists in the win as well.
Marian will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Concordia University Chicago to take on the Cougars in a 2 p.m. matinee. It will be the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
