RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's basketball team came up short against host Concordia University Chicago by a score of 78-64 this afternoon, Jan. 21, at Geiseman Gymnasium.
Four players reached double-figures for the Sabres, but it wasn't enough to overcome a hot-shooting first half by the Cougars. CUC went 14-for-32 from the field, including 8-for-13 from three-point range, in the first and took a 41-27 lead into halftime. CUC's Kristyna Rickett scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Cougars to the double-digit victory.
Concordia Chicago improves to 6-10 overall, 4-7 in the NAC, while the Sabres fall to 11-7 (7-5 NAC).
Marian out-rebounded the Cougars, 45-39, and tallied 20 second-chance points, but CUC managed to turn 15 Sabre turnovers into 19 points and went 10-for-19 from downtown to pull out the upset win.
Marian shot just 34.3 percent (23-for-67) from the field, including 7-of-32 from long range. A tough day at the free throw line (11-for-21) also did in the visitors.
Joining Huray in double-figures was senior
Alexis Becker with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Bianca Whittington and
Elizabeth Zutz added 10 points apiece as well. Whittington chipped in eight rebounds, while Zutz pulled down 10 caroms and dished out five assists.
The Sabres will look to start a new winning streak, while avenging an earlier season loss, when they take on Wisconsin Lutheran College this Tuesday, Jan. 24. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
