FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team fell for the first time in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play this season, dropping a 4-1 decision to the ninth-ranked Adrian College Bulldogs inside Blueline Family Ice Center this afternoon, Jan. 22.
In a helter skelter first period that saw four goals scored, it was the Bulldogs that went into the first intermission leading 3-1. It was all the visitors needed as they tacked on a second period insurance tally to seal the game away. Adrian goaltender Scott Shackell made 33 saves, including 15 in the second period, to record his eighth win of the season.
Adrian improves to 12-4 overall, 10-1 in the MCHA, while Marian drops to 8-4-4 (7-1-3 MCHA).
Adrian's Josh Cousineau started the scoring at the 4:23 mark of the first period with a blast from just inside the blue line. But the Sabres answered quickly as
Dmitry Sentsov took an
Aaron Leonard pass and beat Shackell to tie the game at 1-1 at the 5:56 mark.
At the 7:14 mark, Adrian responded back with a Zach Graham score, his 10th goal of the season, to put the Bulldogs back in front.
Just before the period ended,
Dakota Dubetz was whistled for cross checking at the 19:11 mark and the Bulldogs took advantage. With seven seconds left on the clock, Chris Stansik connected on the power play goal to give the Bulldogs a commanding, 3-1, lead, one they would not relinquish.
Shelby Gray tacked on one more goal for good measure en route to the win for Adrian.
The Sabres out-shot the Bulldogs, 34-28, in the contest.
Both teams will do it again in the series finale tomorrow afternoon. Puck drops at 2 p.m. inside Blueline Family Ice Center.
