WAUPUN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team rung in the New Year with its first point of the 2011-12 campaign after scoring twice in the third period to earn a 2-2 draw to visiting Augsburg College at the Waupun Ice Rink this evening, January 7.
Kristin Skubic and Devan Lesch scored within a minute and half of each other to give the Sabres a brief 2-1 lead before Kendall Christian provided the game-tying goal at the 13:24 mark, which proved to hold for the tie. Marian goaltender made 46 saves in preserving the draw for the Sabres, including making 23 stops in the second period alone.
With the tie, the Sabres are now 0-11-1 overall, while the Auggies move to 4-4-2.
After an evenly played first period, Augsburg came out in the second on all cylinders. The Auggies tallied 24 shots on goal, but only had one score to show for it thanks to Alexander's effort in goal. With an intermission to catch their breath, the Sabres came out in the third and poured it on with 17 shots on goal, including two scores.
Marian was 0-for-7 in power plays, but was able to kill off all four of Augsburg's power play opportunities.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon to conclude the two-game set at 2 p.m. at Blueline Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac, Wis.
