FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team dropped a non-conference affair to visiting Augsburg College, 3-1, inside Blueline Family Ice Center this afternoon, Jan. 8.
The Sabres had numerous chances to mount a comeback after the Auggies scored twice at the end of the opening period. Marian went 0-for-10 in power plays for the game, while squandering two 5-on-3 opportunities in the third period. After
Devan Lesch cut the deficit to 2-1, Augsburg's Rachel Hennessy scored her second goal of the game and added enough insurance to seal the road victory.
Augsburg improves to 5-4-2 on the season with the win, while the Sabres fall to 0-12-1 with the loss.
Hennessy and front line mate, Sara Rajewsky, teamed up to score twice in a span of 1:19 just prior to the first period horn, giving the Auggies a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Sabres responded with another solid second period, out-shooting the Auggies 16-12, but only had one goal to show for it. Lesch tipped in a shot off the stick of
Kaitlyn Johnson to make it a 2-1 game at the 4:08 mark.
Megan Sesing-Gomoll was also credited with an assist.
However, just 2:45 later, Hennessy added an insurance tally, giving the Auggies an insurmountable advantage to steal three points from the Sabres on the two-game road trip.
Marian will jump back into NCHA play next weekend with a two-game set at UW-Eau Claire Jan. 13-14. Friday's game is slated for 7 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.
