Stars Best Sabres in Four Sets

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team fell to visiting Dominican University in four sets (25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 26-24) in Northern Athletics Conference play this afternoon, Oct. 6.

After dropping the first two sets, the Sabres battled back to win the third set, 25-21, and nearly took the second set before the Stars closed it out in extra points, 26-24. Marian's Anna Smit and Dominican's Claire Dezelski led all hitters with 17 kills. MU's Katie Reimer recorded 43 assists and three Sabres reached double-digit digs, led by Ashley Zumbrock's 24.

Marian falls to 13-10 overall, 5-3 in the NAC with the loss, while Dominican improved to 18-3 (7-1 NAC) with the win.

The first set was plagued with Marian miscues as it converted just six of 35 attacks. Meanwhile, Dominican was able to put away 16 kills on 34 attacks for a .294 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-16 set win.

The second set was a see-saw affair. Trailing 20-17, the Sabres made a run to tie the score and forced the Stars to take a timeout. The strategy proved effective as Dominican roared out of the pep talk to score five of the last seven points for the set win.

The Sabres put together a solid third set, hitting .220 with 16 kills on 41 attacks, while hold the Stars to .073 hitting from the floor. Much like the second set for the Stars, the Sabres saw the other team begin to come back, but they were able to hold off the visitors for a 25-21 set win.

Dominican jumped out to a 16-8 advantage in the fourth set, but the Sabres stormed back with a huge run, tying the score at 20-20 and briefly taking a 21-20 lead. However, the Stars didn't let this one slip away as they finished off the match with a 26-24 set win.

Marian will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 10, as it hits the road to take on Lake Forest in a non-conference battle. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
