Sabres Open Season with Win Over Vikings, 64-60

Box Score

APPLETON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A complete team effort led the Marian University women's basketball team to a victory in the season opener over non-conference opponent, Lawrence University, defeating the Vikings 64-60 this evening, Nov. 15.

The Sabres had four players score in double-digit figures, including a near triple-double from junior, Dani Huray, who finished the evening with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Getting her first collegiate start, freshman, Rissa Cerveny chipped in with 11 points.

Marian improved to 1-0 overall with the win, while Lawrence fell to 0-1.

The first half of the game started slow as only seven points were scored in the first seven minutes – advantage Vikings. The Sabres were lucky to be down only seven points after committing turnovers during the seven-minute span. Cerveny would finally break the ice, knocking down a three at the 12:23 mark.

The Sabres would find themselves down 13 points with three minutes remaining in the first half before fighting back to cut the lead down to three, ending the half on a 10-0 run.

Marian's own big three, Huray, Ashley Backes and Sarah Albert led the Sabres on a 18-5 run before the Vikings took a time out, putting the Sabres up 48-38 midway through the second half. The Vikings, however, would chisel the Sabres' lead to two with Katie Schumacher leading the way.

With just 25 seconds left, LU's Kassidy missed a layup that would have cut the lead to one, but Marian hung on to earn their first victory of the season. Albert would finish the game with 15 points going 5-for-8 from behind the arc, while Backes chipped in with 12 points.

Marian continues on the road as they open up Northern Athletics Conference play, visiting Maranatha Baptist Bible College this Saturday, Nov. 17. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
