Sabres Dominate Finlandia in 5-1 Win

Box Score

HANCOCK, Mich. (SabreAthletics.com) – Two goals and an assist from Megan Sesing-Gomoll led the Marian University women's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over host Finlandia University and off to a 1-0 start in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, this evening, Nov. 9.

Katie Lindsley gave the Sabres an early lead late in the first period before Finlandia answered with the game-tying goal just before the first intermission. Marian then went on to score four unanswered goals en route to the win. The Sabres peppered the Lion goalie with 69 shots, while Marian's Amanda Alexander stopped 13 of the 14 shots she faced in the victory.

Marian improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCHA with the win, while Finlandia dropped to 0-3 (0-3 NCHA) with the loss.

Lindsley's goal came at the 17:50 mark in the first period and gave the Sabres an early advantage just before the first break. However, that advantage would be short-lived as the Lions benefited from a power play opportunity by scoring with just 24 seconds left in the first. Sommer O'Shaughnessy was credited with the goal.

Neither team scored again until the 16:06 mark in the second period when Sesing-Gomoll added the first of her two goals on an assist by Lindsley. Brittany Syms scored an insurance tally at the 18-minute mark on a Sophie Schieldt helper.

In the third, Kristin Skubic took a Rachel Mullendore pass and found the back of the net at the 7:53 mark before Sesing-Gomoll added one more for good measure, an unassisted tally, with 45 seconds remaining.

Marian had no less than 21 shots in any period and rode an offensive explosion to their first winning streak in program history. The Sabres will look to make it three in a row when they face off against Finlandia in the last of a two-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. eastern time.
