Pipers Best Sabres, 2-1

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team fell to Hamline University, 2-1, this evening, Dec. 14 at Blueline Family Ice Center.

After falling behind in the first period, Marian found a way to tie it up early in the third period, but were unable to hold the tie for very long. Piper, Chelsea Koehn accounted for both goals, but none more crucial than her second coming on a power play.

Hamline improved to 2-7-2 overall with the win, while Marian dropped to 3-7-2 with the loss.

In the first period, the Pipers won the shots on goal category, getting off 10 shots as opposed to the Sabres five. The Pipers scored their first goal at the 14:37 mark as Breanna Simon and Jordan Verleye found a wide open Koehn skating down the middle, and slapped one past Ali Glazer's stick side to put the Pipers on board first.

After a scoreless second period, Marian was given a scoring opportunity early in the third period after a Piper hooking penalty. Marian was unable to take advantage of the penalty, but a minute into the Pipers coming back to full-strength, Amanda Waigand, assisted by Katie Lindsley and Thea-Marie Sauca, found the back of the net at the 5:39 mark to tie the game. Marian seemed to have momentum on their side, but wore off after a Erin Dunphy hooking penalty, giving the Pipers a power-play opportunity. Less than one minute into the power-play, Koehn netted her second goal of the evening putting back Haley Johnson's miss.

Kaitlyn Johnson almost tied it up again late in the third period, but hit the pipe and clunked out.

The Sabres return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 15 for game two at 2:00 p.m. at Blueline Family Ice Center.
