Waigand's Late Goal Results in 1-1 Tie With Foresters

Box Score

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team turned in a thrilling finish as they earned a 1-1 tie on the road against Lake Forest College this afternoon, Dec. 2, to complete the series.

Lake Forest anticipated a series sweep over Marian, but those notions were suddenly thwarted when Amanda Waigand scored with less than one minute remaining in the contest. Waigand's goal at the 19:01 mark of the third period tied the game and forced overtime on the road.

Marian moved to 3-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the NCHA with the tie, while Lake Forest moves to 2-1-4 (1-0-4 NCHA).

Despite being out shot once again, 51-23, Sabre goalie, Amanda Alexander came up clutch between the pipes by making 50 saves, including 25 in the third period alone.

Throughout the contest, Marian had ample opportunities to score as Lake Forest committed five penalties, including a key tripping penalty in overtime. Three penalties were called on the Foresters in the first period, but the Sabres managed only five shots.

The Foresters scored their lone goal short-handed as Morgan Pope found the back of the net at the 18:12 mark of the first period. Defense and a standout performance by Alexander, however, kept the game within reach.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Waigand single-handedly weaved through the Forester defense, scoring at the 19:01 mark of the third period to tie the game.

Just 27 seconds into the overtime session, the Sabres were granted a power-play opportunity. Shortly thereafter, controversy ensued as a Marian goal was waved off after it was unclear to the official and goal judge whether or not it had fully crossed the goal line.

The Sabres rest until they host UW-Eau Claire for a two-game series starting Saturday, Dec. 8 at Blue Line Family Center. Puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
