Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's basketball team shot lights out in the first half, but could not sustain the hot-shooting as Lakeland roared back for the, 61-49, Northern Athletics Conference rivalry win inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Dec. 8.

The Sabres made nine first-half three-pointers, but was held to just 20 percent shooting in the second half. Lakeland outscored Marian 37-18 in the second half and held the Sabres to without a single free throw attempt for the game to complete the impressive comeback win.

Lakeland improved to 4-5 overall, 4-2 in the NAC with the win, while Marian dropped to 3-4 (2-3 NAC) with the loss.

The Sabres jumped out to a big advantage after Rissa Cerveny buried a jumper to make it 22-10 at the 12:04 mark of the first half. Amelia Mirsberger knocked down three first-half three's, while Ashley Backes, Sarah Albert and Cerveny each tallied two.

The Sabres took a 31-24 lead into the break and looked poised to shoot the Muskies out of the gym. However, the hot hand was short-lived and the Sabres struggled to find another dimension to supplement their scoring.

Lakeland pounded the ball inside, outscoring the Sabres 22-2 in the paint for the game, while holding a 48-31 rebounding advantage, 22 of those on the offensive glass.

By the 14:22 mark, Taylor Jandrin had given the Muskies a 38-37 lead, one they would not relinquish. Becky Mayo led four Lakeland players in double figures with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Dana Henrichs added 14 points, while Leah Eisner also contributed a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jandrin chipped in 10 points.

Cerveny led Marian with 14 points, while Mirsberger and Backes added 12 and 11, respectively. Albert tallied nine points and a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.

The Sabres will have the week off as students wrap up the semester with finals week. Marian returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 15, when it will play host to UW-Stout at 2 p.m.
