RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – For the second straight season in a Northern Athletics Conference Quarterfinal match-up, Dominican University ended the year for the Marian University women's basketball team, this time with a 72-56 victory. Senior forward
Alexis Becker did everything she could to try and will her team to victory in her final game as a Sabre, scoring a career-high 36 points, but the second-seeded and host Stars proved too much for Becker and the seventh-seeded Sabres to overcome this evening, Feb. 22.
Becker went 13-for-26 from the floor, including 1-for-2 from three and 9-for-11 at the charity stripe to surpass her previous career-high of 33 points, also accomplished against the Stars back on Feb. 5, 2011. Her 36 points were also a conference-best in a single game this season. She was the only Sabre in double-figures as Marian shot just 39.6 (21-for-53) percent from the field. Meanwhile, Sarah Budz led three Stars in double-figures with 18 points as the Stars went 49.1 (28-for-57) percent from the floor.
Dominican out-rebounded the Marian, 40-24, and knocked down eight of 22 three-point attempts. Ashley Oliver added 17 points, while Kayla Blom chipped in 11.
The reigning South Division champs, Dominican, advance to the NAC Quarterfinals and improve its overall record to 18-8. The Sabres end their season with a 13-13 overall mark.
With 2:24 left in the first half, the Sabres trailed by only three points, 30-27, after a pair of free throws by
Anna Smit. However, the Stars would go on a six-point run to finish the half, building the advantage to nine.
When the second half began, it increased to double-digits. The Sabres struggled to get anything going, falling behind 49-33 at the 15:17 mark. After that, the deficit never shrunk to fewer than 11 points.
Becker accounted for the first nine Marian points of the second half. The Dominican lead would grow to as many as 21 points before it was all said and done and will now advance to face MSOE in the semifinals Friday night.
