Box Score - vs. UW-Stevens Point

MARQUETTE, Mich. (SabreAthletics.com)
– Despite out-hitting both opponents, the Marian University softball team settled for a Sunday split after defeating Mount Mary and falling in extra-innings to UW-Stevens Point in the final day of the Finlandia Dome Tournament today, Feb. 26.

The Sabres totaled 22 runs on 23 hits in both games combined. They beat Mount Mary 15-1 in their first game behind Liz Schaller's big day. In the second game, Emilie Jansen drove in Schaller in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 6-6 and eventually send it to extra-innings. However, the Pointers scored three in the eighth to go onto win 9-7.

Schaller finished the day 6-for-8 with six runs scored and seven RBI's, including a grand slam and bases clearing triple. Jansen also had a banner day, going 4-for-8 with a homerun and three RBI's

The Sabres fell to 1-3 on the young season and will now prepare for an eight-game spring trip in Tucson, Ariz. March 12-16.

In game one, the Sabres needed just eight hits to push 15 runs across against Mount Mary. Seven of those runs were driven in by Schaller on a pair of hits. She scored the game's first run after reaching base with a walk in the top of the first, eventually scoring on a wild pitch to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead after one.

Schaller came up again in the second inning with three runners on and cracked her first career homerun and grand slam to make it 5-0.

In the third inning, the bases were full of Sabres for Schaller again. This time, she cleared them again, but stopped at third with a triple to put Marian in front 8-0. She later scored on a passed ball to make it 9-0 after three innings.

The Sabres scored four more times in the fourth on RBI hits by Molly Sippel, Aubrey O'Neill and Katlin Jarvis.

Cherise Waltz and Brooke Koechell combined to allow just five hits over five innings. Waltz surrendered one unearned run and struck out four, while walking two in three innings before Koechell threw the final two frames by giving up just three hits.

Against UW-Stevens Point, both teams scored a run in the first before the Pointers posted a three-spot in the second inning. The Sabres crawled back in with a run in the third and three in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Sippel singled in a run for the second straight at-bat and then with two-on in the fourth, Emily Boehnlein homered to put Marian in front.

Needing an answer, UWSP got one as Rennicke and Schreiner provided RBI base hits to put the Pointers back in front, 6-5. But Jansen tied it for the Sabres with an RBI single to score Schaller. Both teams went scoreless in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

By rule, a runner was placed at second base to begin the top of the eighth. The first batter of the inning, Rennicke, then crushed a two-run homer to put the Pointers ahead, 8-6. Amdt would double in a run before the inning came to a close to give UWSP a three-run lead.

The Sabres could only manage an RBI groundout before the final out was made in their half of the eighth. Waltz went the distance in the circle, allowing nine runs (5 earned) on 11 hits, while striking out four and walking just one.

The Sabres will next play on their spring trip in Tucson, Ariz. where they will play eight games in five days, beginning on March 12.
