APPLETON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team suffered a tough 4-3 overtime loss to host Lawrence University in the opener of the Battle of Highway 41 series, this evening, Feb. 3. Matt Hughes scored with 10 seconds left in overtime with a wraparound goal to give the Vikings the win.
Marian held leads of 2-0 and 3-2 as late as the final few minutes of the third period, but Gustav Lindgren scored with 3:07 remaining in regulation to push the game into overtime. Despite 54 shots, including the first five in the overtime session, the Sabres could not push across the decisive goal. The Hughes netted the game-winner to hand Marian its second straight overtime defeat.
Lawrence improves to 8-9-3 overall and pulls to within two points of division-leading Marian with a 7-5-3 MCHA record. Marian falls to 9-7-4 (8-4-4 MCHA).
Bryce Wilson and
Matt Berger spotted the Sabres a 2-0 first period lead. Wilson tallied his eighth goal on assists by
Dakota Dubetz and
Brendan Roberts, while Berger chipped in his fourth score on an assist by his brother Brian.
Lindgren scored his first of two goals in the second period to cut the deficit in half at the 5:18 mark. Then in the third, Hughes scored the first of his two scores just 11 seconds into the period to tie the game at 2-2. At the 8:09 mark, Roberts put Marian back in front on another assist by Dubetz.
But then it was Lindgren again with the game-tying goal at the 16:53 mark of the third period to send it to overtime. Hughes' 12th goal of the year came with 10 seconds left in the extra session to give the Vikings the win.
The Battle of Highway 41 will conclude tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. puck drop inside Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac.
