FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team had a chance to avenge last night's overtime loss to Lawrence University on the road with a home game this afternoon, but the Vikings were able to use their momentum in capturing a 6-2 win and the Battle of Highway 41 trophy, this afternoon, Feb. 4.
LU's Brad Scurfield scored just 10 seconds into the game to give the Vikings the early edge and things snowballed from there for the Sabres. Two more goals were scored by the visitors in the first period before Marian's
Brendan Roberts finally got the hosts on the board with a goal in the second.
Chris Thompson cut the deficit to 3-2 later on, but Lawrence was much too strong as they cruised to the convincing win.
The Vikings grabbed a share of first place in the MCHA North Division standings with the win, improving to 9-9-3 overall, 8-5-3 in MCHA play. Meanwhile, the Sabres fall for the third straight time, dropping to 9-8-4 (8-5-3 MCHA).
Matt Hughes, the hero of last night's thrilling overtime win, put the game seemingly out of reach after making the score 5-2 with about 15 minutes left in the game. Scurfield then poured salt on the wound, adding his second of the game, with a bookend goal at the 11:36 mark to close out the scoring.

Josh Baker took the loss after making 26 saves and prior to getting a game disqualification for fighting as the second period came to a close.
Randy Willis stepped in and made 13 saves in the final stanza. Peter Emery of Lawrence stopped 25 shots to get the win.
Marian will host Northland in a two-game set next weekend, Feb. 10-11. Friday's puck drops at 8 p.m.
