FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team fell to UW-Superior in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association match-up, 5-2, using four second period goals to pace it to the win inside Blue Line Family Ice Center this afternoon, Feb. 4.
Marian's
Kristin Skubic and
Rachel Mullendore each recorded goals, but it wasn't enough to outdo Alison Shrift, who tallied a two-goal game for the visiting Yellowjackets en route the victory. UWS outshot the Sabres 53-16 in the game. Marian goaltender
Amanda Alexander made a season-high 53 stops in the loss, while Amy Torgerson turned aside 16 shots for the win.
The Yellowjackets improve to 13-5-3 overall, 11-3-2 in the NCHA. Meanwhile, the Sabres drop to 1-17-3 (1-13-2 NCHA).
It was 1-0 after one period as Kerry Mayhew scored her eighth goal of the year at the 9:49 mark. The lead would grow to 3-0 nearly midway through the second period after Shrift's first of two and Dani Schultz's 18th score for the eventual game-winner. Skubic made it 3-1 at the 9:19 mark in the second period, but Shrift added her eighth followed by Haley Olmstead's second of the year before the end of the period.
Leading 5-1 in the third at the 4:10 mark in the third, Mullendore cut the deficit with her sixth goal of the year and second in as many nights, but it was too little, too late for the Sabres.
Marian did steal a point from the Yellowjackets after Friday's night's 3-3 tie. They will now hit the road, taking on Adrian in a two-game series in Michigan next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-12.
