FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University softball team dropped a non-conference home doubleheader to visiting University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 6-2 and 14-2, at Smith Fields this evening, March 28.
The Sabres were out-hit 23-10 in the two contests combined and squandered an early lead in game one. After scoring six unanswered runs to take game one, the Pointers' bats stayed hot in game two. UWSP jumped out to a 10-0 lead and ended up scoring in every inning but one en route to the run-shortened, five-inning affair.
The Pointers improve to 10-8 overall, while the Sabres drop to 5-9 in their final tune-up before Northern Athletics Conference play kicks off this weekend with a home doubleheader against Dominican on Saturday.
In game one, the Sabres took a 2-0 lead on RBI hits by
Nikki Ponticelli and
Ariel O'Neill. After that, UWSP starting pitcher, Sara Babbitts, would settle down. She wouldn't allow another run and went on to strike out five in a complete game win.
The Pointers scored three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth before adding an insurance tally in the sixth.
In game two, the Pointers scored three in the first and second and added four in the third to take a commanding 10-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings. The Sabres scored twice in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch and Ponticelli RBI single, but it wasn't enough.
Brooke Koechell took the loss in game one, while
Cherise Waltz was on the short-end in game two.
The Sabres will return to action for their conference home opener this Saturday, March 31, when they will take on Dominican in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
