Box Scores - Game 1, Game 2
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University softball team earned a much-needed Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep against host Concordia Chicago with wins of 4-2 and 11-4 this afternoon, April 21.
Emilie Jansen went a combined 5-for-8 this afternoon with four RBIs and three runs scored. Meanwhile,
Molly Sippel added four hits with four RBIs, while
Liz Schaller recorded three hits with three runs scored to lead the Sabres.
Marian improves to 13-15 overall, 8-6 in NAC play, while Concordia Chicago falls to 10-22 (8-10 NAC).
The Sabres used a three-run fifth to pace them to a narrow game one victory followed by a nine-run sixth inning in game two on the way to a convincing game two win.
Leading 1-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Sabres strung together three consecutive hits to make it a more-breathable, 4-0, advantage. With
Courtney Krueger standing on third, Jansen doubled in the first run of the frame. The next batter,
Emily Boehnlein singled her home for another tally. Before it was said and done, Sippel had doubled down the left field line, providing the final insurance run.
Cherise Waltz did the rest. The senior went the distance, allowing just two runs on five hits over seven innings of work to pick up her 10th victory of the season.
She carried over the momentum in game two, pitching a complete game for the 20th time this year to pick up her 11th win.
Marian trailed Concordia Chicago, 3-1, after five innings, but a nine-run sixth wiped that away and propelled the Sabres to their eighth conference win.
The Sabres sent 14 batters the plate. The back-breaker was after the Cougars had brought in their third pitcher of the inning,
Nikki Ponticelli cracked a two-run homer to center field.
Marian will head to Rockford tomorrow, April 22, to take on the Regents in a noon doubleheader on the road.
