Sabres and Spartans Play to 1-1 Draw

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Northern Athletics Conference foe, Aurora University, this evening, Sept. 19. Both teams played under challenging conditions as rain and a one hour and 45-minute lightning delay prolonged the match to the 11 o'clock hour.

David Reinke got in the scoring column for the first time this year with a breakaway goal in the sixth minute, but Xavier Carrillo came up with the equalizer in the 51st minute.

Marian moves to 0-4-3 overall, 0-1-1 in the NAC, while Aurora moves to 4-2-1 (1-0-1 NAC).

Reinke put the Sabres on the board early in this one, scoring on a breakaway in the sixth minute. The junior forward broke free of the defense and unleashed a blast from six yards out and inside the left post.

In the 51st minute, Carrillo scored his fifth goal of the year when he was left open on the right side and sent a blast inside the right post against Marian goalie Bryce Woldt.

In the 67th minute, Aurora defender Corey Novotny made a run on the left side of the goal with a sliding chip attempt, but Marian keeper Woldt was there to make the save. Woldt had his body in the goal and had the presence in mind to extend the ball into the field of play to keep the game tied.

Neither team scored in either 10-minute overtime session.

The Sabres will be on the road this weekend, taking on Concordia Chicago in River Forest, Ill. Saturday, Sept. 22, at 1:30 p.m.
