Men's Hoops Grabs, 75-71, Overtime Win at WLC

Box Score

MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – Junior Cody Veleke and freshman Drew Binversie combined for 41 points and the Marian University men's basketball team came away with a, 75-71, come-from-behind, overtime victory on the road over Northern Athletics Conference foe, Wisconsin Lutheran College, this afternoon, Jan. 12.

Binversie and Veleke led the team with 23 and 18 points, respectively, with 36 points combined coming in the second half and overtime. The Sabres overcame as much as a nine-point deficit to come away with the victory despite giving up 25 points on 22 turnovers. WLC's Tim Demuth led all scorers with 33 points on 12-of-22 from the field, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc in the losing effort.

Marian won for the fourth straight time and fifth time in its last six tries as it improved to 8-7 overall, 4-3 in the NAC. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Lutheran dropped to 7-10 (4-4 NAC) after just its second loss in the seven games.

The Sabres fought back from a nine-point deficit to trail by just four, 26-22, at halftime despite shooting 28.6 percent (6-for-21) in the first half alone. No Sabre had more than Sam Koslowski's four points, while Demuth led the Warriors with nine.

In the second half, Marian tied the game at 35-all on a pair of Mike Keller free throws with 14:50 left in regulation and then took its first lead on a Brad Koth three-pointer at the 12:30 mark. Koth would tally two more from long distance to finish with nine points in nine quality minutes off the bench.

Marian led by as many as four points before Demuth and the Warriors battled back. There were nine ties and five lead changes down the stretch. Veleke gave the Sabres a two-point lead with 13 seconds remaining before Nate Bauer tied it up at 64-64 with five seconds. A final chance for Marian came on a missed three-pointer by Alex Stecker at the horn.

In overtime, a minute went by before buckets by Binversie and Veleke gave the Sabres a four-point lead. A Demuth three-pointer would give WLC a 69-68 lead with 2:18 left, but Binversie came back the other way and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put Marian on top and they wouldn't look back from there.

The Sabres went just 16-for-24 at the charity stripe, but came through when it mattered most, knocking down its last seven attempts at the end of the second half and overtime.

The Sabres win their second overtime game of the season on the road after a 90-78 double-overtime victory over Martin Luther earlier this season. Marian will look to make it five straight wins when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin Tuesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
