Sabres Score First, But Pointers Win Match, 4-1

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Erin Dunphy put the Sabres on board first, but the Marian University women's hockey team was unable to hold the lead in tonight's, Jan. 16 match-up, as the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point scored four unanswered goals.

Fresh off winter break, Marian got off to a quick start scoring right away in the first period. From there, however, Stevens Point took over retaliating with two goals in the same period, and added two more throughout the match.

Wis. –Stevens Point improved to 7-4-2 overall and 6-3-2 in NCHA play, while Marian dropped to 3-9-2 (2-5-2 NCHA) with the loss.

Awarded a power-play opportunity early in the first period, Marian managed to gain the lead with an Erin Dunphy, assisted by Megan Sesing-Gomoll goal at the 8:16 mark. Later in the same period, after a Katie Lindsley interference penalty, Pointer Shauna Bollinger, assisted by Nicole Schaub and Brook Hanson took full advantage of their power-play opportunity finding the net at the 14:12 mark to tie the game. The Pointers gained the lead late in the first period at the 18:17 mark with an Emily Lester goal. In the first period alone, Sabre goalie, Amanda Alexander faced 20 shots.

In the second period, the Pointers were not done scoring as Bollinger netted her second goal of the match at the 5:12 mark. The Sabres managed only eight shots in the second period compared to the Pointers 11.

Leading 3-1 into the third period, the Pointers managed 14 more shots for a total of 45 on the evening, and found the net once more in the last seconds of the match while the Sabres pulled Alexander for the man advantage. In total, Marian was out shot 45-17 with just one shot on goal for the entire third period.

With little time to regroup, Marian is back in action as it takes on the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin, Friday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.
