Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - After pushing the conference leaders to a fourth set on Friday evening, Marian returned to Sadoff Gymnasium on Saturday, October 12, to host Aurora. Much like Friday, the match would go four sets, but this time, the scores favored the Sabres.
The Sabres came out strong in the opening set, showing no signs of disappointment from the night prior. Both teams fought hard, but it would be Marian who took the opening set 25-22. Sophomores Anna Smit and Bailey Kapitzke both had three kills in the set, while Katrina Jansen added seven digs.
Aurora would come back, however, fighting their back to draw up the score at one set a piece. Andrea Kappelman pounded away eight kills for the Spartans to help capture the second set, 25-20.
With the ever critical set looming, Marian shook off the early setback and took the lead with a 25-22 win. Senior Ashley Zumbrock use her finesse serving to capture two aces in the set.
With the lead in hand, Marian jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the fourth set. Head Coach Kerri Huebel utlized her team's lead to give her starters a rest. All in all, 15 different Sabres participated in the final set, sealing the match victory, 25-18.
Freshman Jordan Menges finished with 31 sets on the day.
Zumbrock finished the day with 15 kills over the four sets. This, in combination with her 10 on Friday night, moves her into sole possession of second place all-time in Sabres history for career digs with 1,333, passing Jessica Krzewina ('96-'99) who has 1,326. Andrea Harmsen ('98-'01) leads the Sabres all-time with 2,005 digs.
The win moves the Sabres to 7-16 overall and 2-4 in the NACC. They will travel to Madison on Tuesday to take on Edgewood.
