(SabreAthletics.com) – Junior goalkeeper Bryce Woldt came up with eight big saves to lead the Marian University men's soccer team in earning a point with a 0-0 draw at home against visiting Aurora University in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play at Smith Field, this afternoon, Oct. 19.
Woldt's eight saves were crucial as the Sabres were without their leading scorer David Reinke, who was out with a leg injury. The Sabres managed just two shots on goal as the Spartans held a 32-13 shots advantage throughout the match.
The Sabres moved to 4-8-2 overall, 1-6-1 in the NACC, while the Spartans moved to 8-5-3 (3-2-2 NACC).
Marian endured a 15-5 shot discrepancy in the first half, but allowed just one shot on goal as the Spartans continued to try their hand at long range attempts.
The Sabres closed the gap slightly as Aurora held a 13-6 edge in shots in the second half, but Woldt made five saves to keep the game scoreless.
Gustavo Carmona tallied both shots on goal for Marian, while Jon Rosenbaum led the Spartans with three shots on goal and seven shots total in the match.
The longer the match went on, the more physical it got as nine yellow cards were issued throughout. There were 34 fouls called with Aurora whistled for 18.
Marian will be back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 23, when it takes on Lakeland College at 7 p.m. Seniors Jacob Dorsey, Michael Ekstrom, Nate Peltonen and David Reinke will be honored in the final home game this season at Smith Field.
