Box Score MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – Junior Leisa Conn assisted Maisie Floyd on the game-winner and added an insurance tally late to lead the Marian University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over host Alverno College in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play at Alverno Field, this afternoon, Oct. 22.
Floyd netted her first goal of the season on a header off a beautiful cross from Conn, who added her second assist of the year. The Sabres outshot the Inferno 16-10 on the day, while holding a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The goalkeeping tandem of Caitlyn Rosenberger and Alysha Kallas made four saves apiece to earn the combined shutout, Marian's fifth clean sheet of the season.
With the win, the Sabres improved to 7-7-1 overall, 5-3-1 in the NACC, while the Inferno dropped to 8-8 (2-7 NACC) with the loss.
From the outset, Marian dictated the pace of play and controlled possession to force Alverno to have to play with a defensive mindset. The strategy would lead to an early Sabre goal.
The teamwork of Floyd and Conn equated to 10th-minute to put Marian ahead 1-0. Working the ball into the attacking third, Conn lofted a pass from the left side to the far post where Floyd was in perfect position to direct a header past a sliding Samantha Robinson in goal.
Robinson made six saves in taking the hard-luck loss.
The insurance score came in the 90th minute with just 54 seconds remaining when Conn slotted a ball past Robinson again from about eight yards out. The scoring chance was made possible thanks to a pair of lead passes by senior Shayni Paul and freshman Mikaila Johnson, who tallied assists on the play.
The fourth-place Sabres travel to Benedictine (5-9-2, 3-4-2 NACC), which lurks just five points behind in seventh place. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
